Slow Drinking Guide

A new monthly beverage and culture forward letter written to celebrate Latin American heritage.

The Art of Slow Drinking in 2026

Vida Mia was created in 2018 as a tribute to my Mexican heritage and as a creative outlet. I created a platform that allowed us, kids of immigrants and allies, to learn the history of the maguey, share our stories, and to treat agave spirits like a fine wine. Fast forward to 2026, we are experiencing a renaissance in Chicago by harnessing our cultural power, drinking less alcohol, and practicing how to be more united as neighbors. Vida Mia is evolving to match the energy of the moment by highlighting people and places that are embracing the slow drinking movement.

Slow drinking is a mindful practice of savoring a beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) by taking deliberate sips to appreciate flavors, aromas, and textures, transforming a drink into a sensory experience or a small ritual.

Where to slow drink in Chicago.....

🥂 DRY JANUARY: Beatnik's spirit-free Penicillin cocktail made with smoked teas, bourbon-infused vanilla chai, ginger, honey, and fresh lemon juice is just like the real deal minus the Scotch whisky. Sharing a solid Dry January list from the Eater published last year.

🎟️ TODOS PONEN EVENT: On MLK Day, January 19th, "Pueblos y Platillos" is a one-night event uniting 40+ chefs, tastings, drinks, & music to raise funds for immigrant families impacted by ICE. Learn how to support here.

☕ LOCAL CAFES: What is your cozy spot? Casa Cactus is my go-to-spot in Albany Park for it's matcha maguey latte and beautiful plant filled space.

🍽 TRINO STEAKHOUSE: Spend a Sunday evening here for live Cuban Jazz music from the 40’s, and 50’s while sipping on a Patio Verde cocktail made with aloe, mint, and Havana Club anejo rum. The wagyu tartare and sliders on their weekday happy hour menu are worth the visit.

Check out the Vida Mia Directory for more local spots. New additions will be added bi-monthly.
